ISO 17025

What is ISO 17025:2005 or NABL?

ISO/IEC 17025 is the main standard used by testing & calibration laboratories. Originally known as ISO/IEC guide 25, ISO/IEC 17025 was initially issued by the international organization for the standardization in 1999. It was first published in 2001 & on 2005. There are two main sections in ISO/IEC 17025. Management requirements are primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory. Technical requirements address the competence of staff, methodology, test/calibration equipment, and the quality and reporting of test and calibration results.

Benefits of ISO 17025 Accreditation

ISO 17025 accreditation provides formal recognition to laboratories that demonstrate technical competence. Accreditation bodies use the standard specifically to assess factors relevant to a laboratory's ability to produce precise, accurate test and calibration data, including:

  • Technical competence of staff
  • Validity and appropriateness of test methods
  • Traceability of measurements and calibrations to national standards
  • Suitability, calibration and maintenance of test equipment
  • Testing environment
  • Sampling, handling and transportation of test items
  • Quality assurance of test and calibration data
